COVID-19 Outbreak Media Statement (updated October 26, 2020)

October 26, 2020

We are currently investigating COVID-19 outbreaks at two Covenant Health facilities in the Edmonton zone.

Misericordia Community Hospital

A total of 16 patients have tested positive for COVID-19. This remains unchanged since our last update.

Fourteen staff members have tested positive. This is an increase of one since our last update, (October 23).

To date, two deaths are associated with the outbreak. On behalf of the entire Covenant family, we offer our deepest condolences to these patients’ families and loved ones at this difficult time.

Visitors to the affected units are being restricted at this time. We encourage families to continue to meet virtually with their loved ones.

Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre

As we continue our investigation into this outbreak, targeted testing has identified a number of new cases among asymptomatic residents and staff.

A total of 49 residents and one patient have tested positive for COVID-19. That is an increase of 25 since the last update, (October 23).

Eighteen staff members have tested positive. That is an increase of 12 since the last update, (October 23).

Sadly, a second resident death occurred in connection to this outbreak. We are saddened by this loss and share our deepest sympathies with this patient’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.

Out of an abundance of caution, the site is closed to admissions and transfers. We have also extended visitation restrictions to the whole site at this time. This also includes designated family supports, except for end-of-life situations. We encourage families to continue to meet virtually with their loved ones.

Our residents’ families are part of the community at the Edmonton General. From the beginning of the pandemic, we have been in frequent, regular contact via virtual Town Hall meetings and other correspondence. At this time, we continue to provide those vital opportunities to connect and update our community; especially important when in-person visitation is restricted.

The safety of our residents, patients, staff, physicians and visitors remains our number one priority. Our teams continue to work tirelessly and collaboratively, taking every possible step to respond with compassion to this challenging situation and to ensure a safe environment for care.

Outbreak protocols

Outbreak protocols have been implemented at the facilities to ensure the ongoing protection of residents, patients, physicians, staff and visitors.

Testing of all patients and residents on the affected units continues, as well as all staff who have either worked on or have been present on those units, even if they are not showing symptoms. All potential contacts are being traced to ensure we reduce the possibility of spread and we are following Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness and Public Health isolation and testing protocols.

We continue to work with the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health and Alberta Health Services to ensure our hospital is safe and are following protocols to minimize risk of spread including:

  • Thorough environmental cleaning with hospital grade disinfectants;
  • Ensuring proper usage of PPE, including donning and doffing;
  • Ensuring proper physical distancing on units and common areas;
  • Ensuring proper hand hygiene practices are being followed.

We care deeply for our patients, residents, physicians, staff and volunteers. We are doing everything we can to contain transmission and keep them and the public safe and healthy.
