This week's reflection

It is the beautiful task of Advent to awaken in all of us memories of goodness and thus to open doors of hope.

COVID-19 Outbreak Media Statement (updated November 20, 2020)

November 20, 2020

Misericordia Community Hospital

An outbreak is currently being investigated at the Misericordia, where three patients have tested positive for COVID-19. There have been no increases in patient or staff cases since November 10.

Visitors to the affected unit are restricted at this time. We encourage families to continue to meet virtually with their loved ones.

Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre

There are 40 active cases of COVID-19 among residents and patients - no increase since November 16.

There are a total of 54 active cases among staff - no increase since November 16.

There have been 33 deaths connected to this outbreak. Our residents and their families are part of the community at the Edmonton General. Our teams mourn the loss of each resident, many of whom have called the Edmonton General home for years. We offer our deepest condolences to the families, friends and caregivers of those we’ve lost during this pandemic.

We are pleased to share that as of today, 19 residents and 28 staff have recovered from COVID-19.

Out of an abundance of caution, the site is closed to admissions and transfers. We have also limited visitation to the whole site at this time. This also includes designated family supports, except for end-of-life situations. We encourage families to continue to meet virtually with their loved ones. We continue to provide vital opportunities to connect and update our community; especially important when in-person visitation is restricted.

The safety of our residents, patients, staff, physicians and visitors remains our number one priority. Our teams continue to work tirelessly and collaboratively, taking every possible step to respond with compassion to this challenging situation and to ensure a safe environment for care.

Grey Nuns Community Hospital

We are currently investigating COVID-19 outbreaks on four units within the hospital.

There are currently 13 active cases in patients who have tested positive for COVID-19. This is an increase of one since our last update.

A total of 21* healthcare workers have tested positive for COVID-19.

There have been six deaths connected to this outbreak. On behalf of the entire Covenant family, we offer our deepest condolences to the patient’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.

All patients and staff connected to the affected units are being tested. The units are closed to admissions and transfers and visitors are restricted at this time. We encourage families to continue to meet virtually with their loved ones.

* We are currently working through the contact tracing process to determine if further staff cases are community-acquired or related to the outbreak at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital. Staff numbers will be updated once that process is complete.

Villa Caritas

An outbreak is currently being investigated at Villa Caritas, where three staff connected to two units have tested positive for COVID-19.

Visitors to the affected units are restricted at this time. We encourage families to continue to meet virtually with their loved ones.

Outbreak protocols

Outbreak protocols have been implemented at the facilities to ensure the ongoing protection of residents, patients, physicians, staff and visitors.

Testing of all patients and residents on the affected units continues, as well as all staff who have either worked on or have been present on those units, even if they are not showing symptoms. All potential contacts are being traced to ensure we reduce the possibility of spread and we are following Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness and Public Health isolation and testing protocols.

We continue to work with the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health and Alberta Health Services to ensure our hospital is safe and are following protocols to minimize risk of spread including:

  • Thorough environmental cleaning with hospital grade disinfectants;
  • Ensuring proper usage of PPE, including donning and doffing;
  • Ensuring proper physical distancing on units and common areas;
  • Ensuring proper hand hygiene practices are being followed

We care deeply for our patients, residents, physicians, staff and volunteers. We are doing everything we can to contain transmission and keep them and the public safe and healthy.

We know how important it is to stay connected with family and loved ones, but please consider carefully before visiting, and if you are feeling unwell, stay home and visit https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/ for more information.
