This week's reflection

This week's reflection

I believe the second half of one's life is meant to be better than the first half. The first half is finding out how you do it. And the second half is enjoying it.

COVID-19 Outbreak Media Statement (updated June 26)

June 26, 2020

The Misericordia Community Hospital continues to respond to two units on COVID-19 outbreak.

There are now 9 patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Misericordia Community Hospital. That is an increase of three positive cases since yesterday (June 25).

There has also been one patient who died on June 25. Our thoughts and prayers are with this patient’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.

In addition, we have seven staff who have tested positive for COVID-19. That is an increase of two staff members since yesterday.

Outbreak protocols have been implemented at the hospital to ensure the ongoing protection of patients, staff and visitors. Surgical capacity has been reduced and the site is currently only conducting urgent, emergent and oncology surgeries at this time. A total of 28 elective surgeries were postponed today, and 13 will be completed.

Covenant is testing all patients on the affected units and is also testing all staff who have either worked on or have been present on those units even if they are not showing symptoms.

All potential contacts are being traced to ensure we reduce the possibility of spread and we are following Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness and Public Health isolation and testing protocols.

Visitors to the affected units are being restricted at this time. We encourage families to continue to meet virtually with their loved ones.

We continue to work with the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health of Alberta and Alberta Health Services to ensure our hospital is safe and are following protocols to minimize risk of spread including:

  • Thorough environmental cleaning with hospital grade disinfectants;
  • Ensuring proper usage of PPE, including donning and doffing;
  • Ensuring proper physical distancing on units and common areas;
  • Ensuring proper hand hygiene practices are being followed.

We care deeply for our patients and staff. We are doing everything we can to contain transmission and keep patients and the public safe and healthy.
