This week's reflection

Teamwork begins by building trust. And the only way to do that is to overcome our need for invulnerability.

COVID-19 Outbreak Media Statement (updated June 25)

June 25, 2020

Covenant Health is investigating a second COVID-19 outbreak at the Misericordia Community Hospital.

There are now five patients and five staff linked to the initial unit who have tested positive. One patient on a second unit has also tested positive. This patient had received care on the initial unit and was transferred prior to the outbreak.

Sadly, we can now confirm that one death is linked to the initial outbreak. Our thoughts and prayers are with this patient’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.

Outbreak protocols have been implemented at the hospital to ensure the ongoing protection of patients, staff and visitors. Surgical capacity has been reduced and the site is currently only conducting urgent, emergent and oncology surgeries at this time.

Covenant is testing all patients on the affected units and is also testing all staff who have either worked on or have been present on those units even if they are not showing symptoms.

All potential contacts are being traced to ensure we reduce the possibility of spread and we are following Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness and Public Health isolation and testing protocols.

Visitors to the affected units are being restricted at this time. We encourage families to continue to meet virtually with their loved ones.

We continue to work with the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health of Alberta and Alberta Health Services to ensure our hospital is safe and are following protocols to minimize risk of spread including:

  • Thorough environmental cleaning with hospital grade disinfectants;
  • Ensuring proper usage of PPE, including donning and doffing;
  • Ensuring proper physical distancing on units and common areas;
  • Ensuring proper hand hygiene practices are being followed.

We care deeply for our patients and staff. We are doing everything we can to contain transmission and keep patients and the public safe and healthy.
