This week's reflection

I believe the second half of one's life is meant to be better than the first half. The first half is finding out how you do it. And the second half is enjoying it.

Misericordia emergency department temporarily closed

August 20, 2018

EDMONTON — The Misericordia Community Hospital’s Emergency Department is temporarily closed due to damage caused by a water leak within the department.

The closure is expected to remain in effect until at least the morning of Wednesday August 22, until the damage is repaired and the Emergency Department is deemed safe for patient care to resume.

If you need emergency care, please use other emergency departments in and around the city, including:

  • University of Alberta Hospital;
  • Royal Alexandra Hospital;
  • Grey Nuns Community Hospital;
  • Northeast Community Health Centre;
  • Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert;
  • Strathcona Community Hospital in Sherwood Park;
  • WestView Health Centre in Stoney Plain;
  • Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital.

Ambulances are being redirected to other hospitals in the Edmonton area. Patients currently in the Emergency Department are safe and well cared for. These patients are being relocated within the Misericordia Hospital.

Patients who do arrive at the Misericordia Emergency Department will be looked after. A number of Emergency Department staff will remain in place at the Misericordia, to assess and re-direct walk-in patients who are unaware of the closure.

Alberta Health Services has taken steps to ensure other emergency departments are prepared for increased demand stemming from the Misericordia shutdown.

For non-emergencies, please consider your family physician, East Edmonton Urgent Care Centre, or the after-hours services provided by the Primary Care Networks particularly Edmonton Oliver and Edmonton West PCNs.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. We apologize for the inconvenience and concern this may cause you.

For more information on patients currently in the Misericordia Hospital, please call the hospital’s switchboard at 780.735.2000.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
