This week's reflection

I believe the second half of one's life is meant to be better than the first half. The first half is finding out how you do it. And the second half is enjoying it.

Surgeons worldwide flock to iRSM to learn technique to give patients better results

Nine delegates from around the world came to Edmonton to learn how to execute a digital surgical planning technique for reconstructive jaw surgery from specialist surgeons at the Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM) at the Misericordia Community Hospital. iRSM is one of only five centres globally currently using this advanced technique of surgical simulation and planning.

Delegates from the Mayo Clinic, Peking University in Beijing, and the Orema Foundation in Chile learned how to save cancer patients healing time and some surgical procedures in their journey towards better health. The surgical technique they have learnt is specifically for patients that have different forms of jaw or oral cancers, and need to have tumors removed and bone replaced with a piece of bone from one of their legs.

Each delegate was given a unique skull model to design a specialized surgery for. Theylearned how to plan each cut to remove the tumor and the piece of bone from the patient’s leg. They used a 3-D printer to make cutting and drilling guides that shape the bone to fit the patient’s jaw exactly—including where dental implants will be placed.

This technique takes all of the guesswork out of the surgery and gives a better result for the patient. The precision allows patients to look and function as close as possible to the way they were prior to their first surgery. It also reduces the amount of surgeries patients must go through to reach the desired end result.

Innovations led by compassionate care are the hallmark of the iRSM team, formed through a partnership between Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health and the University of Alberta. iRSM is an internationally recognized clinical and research institute focused on medical reconstructive sciences that has been elevating patient’s quality of life since 1993.
