Misericordia gets Hugged

June 11, 2010

It took a couple hundred Covenant Health employees, dozens of volunteers and a whole lot of colorful ribbon for Misericordia staff to “hug their hospital” Wednesday.

The team-building idea came from Linda Chow-Turner, Corporate Director of Edmonton Acute Care, and Hospitality & Clinical Nutrition. “We wanted to bring together our team and community in a social, celebratory environment,” said Linda. “Everyone from ambulatory services to housekeeping attended to embrace our 4000-square foot building in a link of arms and ribbon.”

After the hug, participants gathered in the courtyard to enjoy hot dogs, donuts and traditional Japanese drumming by Kita No Taiko. Most importantly, everyone had the chance to relax and mingle in a stress-free environment. “The goal of today was team building. When we share experiences, we build memories to connect with the people we work alongside everyday. You get to see a different side, the personal side – it’s the glue of our organization,” said Linda.

Chow-Turner planned the event with lots of help from her “hug captains” including Brenda Shim of Volunteer Services. With most staff wearing their green, orange, or blue Covenant Health jackets, the hug was a colorful one. Brenda added, “We’re one big family. Today we created one circle, one union, around the building we work in.”

Among the smiles was Neelam Makhani from the Dietician group. “I can feel the positive team spirit and sense of community. We have strong values, a sense of compassion, and it shows.” Also in attendance was Greg Hadubiak, VP for Edmonton Acute Care, who amused the crowd by joining the drummers with a turn on the cowbell.

The Misericordia’s event reflected Covenant Health’s overall goals to build and engage their team and work with the community. “It’s truly about connecting,” says Linda. And judging by the laughter and bonds created by this hug, spirits will be lifted for some time to come.
