Covenant Health welcomes 200 designated assisted livings spaces in Calgary and Red Deer

April 14, 2010

Thanks to funding secured through the Government of Alberta, Covenant Health is moving forward with plans to add 200 accommodation spaces for seniors.

“The population of seniors in need of continuing care is on the rise in Alberta,” explains Patrick Dumelie, President and CEO.  “We are extremely pleased to extend our mission into Calgary and Red Deer seniors.”

Each of the new Covenant Health facilities in Calgary and Red Deer will have 100 designated assisted living (DAL) beds.  Designated assisted living is often described as both a philosophy and an approach to providing health services in a housing environment, featuring independence and privacy in a living environment that offers medical and personal care supports.

“Covenant Health has taken an innovative approach to delivering a spectrum of services that offers seniors and individuals with disabilities greater choice for accommodation and medical support.” says Patrick.  “Designated assisted living is a critical part of Alberta’s continuing care spectrum and we will continue to lead the way in developing and operating facilities that offer the right care for resident needs.”

Covenant Health currently operates 1438 continuing care beds, including continuing care, designated assisted living and assisted living.  Two hundred and twenty-eight of these beds are DAL spaces, including 200 beds at St. Therese Villa in Lethbridge.  Covenant Health has received accolades for its model of care and is in the process of adding another 60 spaces in Killam, 100 spaces in Lethbridge, and 40 spaces specifically for the homeless in Lethbridge.

“We are extremely grateful the Government of Alberta continues to invest in Covenant Health’s vision,” says Patrick.  “Our strategic direction “Respond to those in need” aligns closely to the Government of Alberta’s continuing care strategy to support seniors, Aging in the Right Place.  At the end of the day, we are all working together to ensure Albertans have access to the right services at the right time.”

On April 14, 2010, the Government of Alberta announced $105 million in continuing care funding to renovate or create spaces in 13 facilities in 11 Alberta communities. View the press realease at http://www.alberta.ca/acn/201004/28133FD13702A-F1F4-6E4B-D14644D7953023C8.html
