This week's reflection

People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel.

Covenant Health Palliative Institute

The Palliative Institute is committed to alleviating suffering for patients and their families by supporting excellence in both palliative and end-of-life care.

What is palliative care?

Although the term ‘palliative care’ is most often associated with the concept of relieving pain for those who are dying, it involves far more than just end-of-life care.

Palliative care improves the quality of life for individuals of any age and at any stage of a life-limiting illness by helping to manage both symptoms and the side effects of treatment.

In addition, palliative care helps patients and their families by preventing and relieving psychological and spiritual suffering during the course of an illness. This could include:

  • Supporting patients in living as positively and actively as possible every day
  • Applying palliative care early in the course of an illness and along with therapies that are intended to prolong life
  • Helping family members cope during a patient’s illness and when death occurs, providing support through their bereavement

When palliative care is applied shortly after the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, patients and caregivers experienced lower levels of stress and depression,  reduced pain, better control of other symptoms and better medical outcomes.

Patients receiving these services have been shown to have shorter hospital stays, spend less time in intensive care and require fewer emergency department visits.

In cases where a patient is nearing the end of life, palliative care neither prolongs life nor hastens death; instead, it focuses on providing comfort, care and dignity right up until the final moments.

What does the Palliative Institute do?

The Palliative Institute was established to build upon and enhance Covenant Health’s leadership role in palliative and end-of-life care through service excellence, applied research and education. We do this by:

  • Supporting initiatives and programs to enhance patient care
  • Collaborating on research that will improve access to and quality of care
  • Increasing understanding of palliative and end-of-life issues through two-way communication with patients, families and members of the public
