This week's reflection

The world connects not by molecules. It connects through ideas, hopes, faces, dreams, actions, stories and memories.

Celebrating 150 years of Catholic health care in Alberta

Our healthcare story began over 150 years ago in November 1863 when the Sisters of Charity (Grey Nuns) of Montreal cared for their first patient in St. Albert.

We’re told he was a 100-year-old man. That may be the stuff of legends, but then again, so were our founding congregations of Sisters. They founded the first hospital, school and orphanage in St. Albert, 42 years before Alberta became a province.

Alberta’s history has strong connections to these women. We admire the Sisters for their love, compassion and courage, and for their desire to minister to the sick, the lonely and the less fortunate. They helped pioneer many of the towns and cities that have become the backbone of our province.

In 2014, we celebrated 150 years of service to Albertans in the places that we serve them—our facilities. Across our 18 facilities, staff, patients, residents and communities shared in this momentous milestone by celebrating their founding congregations and their service to this province.

We’re proud of our history, our ministry and our vision of hope—for today and the future. Even more than that, we’re looking forward to building and growing with you in the generations to come.

We celebrated in four bold stages.
