2011 Respiratory Therapy Week a Success
Lunch and Learn sessions were the highlight of this year’s Respiratory Therapy Week held from October 23 to 30 2011, during which members from the community enjoyed engaging learning opportunities while being treated to a sponsored lunch. Open house, a stethoscope cleaning clinic, and a Respiratory Therapy scavenger hunt were all part of the festivities.
As well, the Misericordia Community Hospital hosted Dr. Barry Finnegan, Professor, Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, University of Alberta, who shared a presentation “Towards a Tobacco Free Future” during grand rounds.
Covenant Health’s respiratory therapists, along with many other stakeholders involved in respiratory care, provided outreach in the community during Respiratory Therapy Week. “Respiratory Therapy: A Day at the Mall” was held at the Kingsway Mall on October 26. In anticipation of the event, the mall commented that people were asking about the event two days in advance and had already lined up for the event prior to the start time. One participant, after hearing about the event on the radio, travelled from Smokey Lake to have spirometry, a simple breathing test, performed. More than 150 spirometries were performed throughout the day with more than 300 people visiting the displays that were set up.
Respiratory therapists within the greater Edmonton area had the opportunity to impact our community and increase awareness of Respiratory Health.
Covenant Health thanks all who participated and our sponsors.
