Over 300 professionals attended the conference to hear Dr. Gabor Maté speak on his research, experiences, insights, and his expertise in the areas of addiction, mental health, and concurrent disorders.
The community presentation focused on Alberta’s 10 year plan to end homelessness.
Dr. Maté is a staff physician at a clinic treating addiction in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, who understands the parallels between addiction and homelessness. As a leader in healing, Maté understands that it is the extreme continuum of addiction that often leads to homelessness, and his message aligns with the collective efforts that Lethbridge has taken to reduce homelessness.
Dr. Maté is an advocate for the treatment of the person as a whole, and not only the symptom. He supports the belief that addiction is caused by askew developmental foundations versus genetics.
The author of four books, all Canadian Bestsellers, Dr. Maté routinely shares his research and experience with audiences across North America.
Dr. Maté was also be joined by Sr. Jovita MacPherson, who is with the Sisters of St. Martha. Sr. Jovita shared her knowledge about homelessness, poverty, and promoting change in people’s lives. Both Dr. Maté and Sr. Jovita participated in a panel discussion where audiences were able to enquire about topics pertinent to their lives and professions. Sr. Jovita MacPherson ministers with people without homes in Halifax. Both bringing unique perspectives and experience in serving these vulnerable individuals with compassion.
