Annual Country Fair brings together generations of fun
Genuine glee spread at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre during the Annual Country Fair on June 5 and 6, 2012.
Residents, volunteers and Grade 8 students from Nellie McClung Girls’ Junior High School were all smiles in the auditorium as they played games and indulged in watermelon and donut eating contests —all to the background of a live two-man band playing oldies, but goodies.
Claudine Markoja, Recreational Therapist and one of the organizers of the Annual Country Fair, explains that the event is in recognition of Seniors’ Week, and ties together nostalgia and fun in a way that both older and younger generations can enjoy.
“This event builds on a sense of community, and is a bright part of the week for the residents here. It creates a great atmosphere, which improves our residents’ quality of life, and that’s really what we’re all about,” said Claudine.
And as residents and their families grinned in their balloon hats, it was evident the event was a highlight.
The popcorn was eagerly eaten, and residents cheered on students and volunteers as they dived in face-first to bright red watermelon slices. The table of nostalgic items and the old-time country fair games were both hits with residents at the care facility.
“The items on the table bring back memories; those are things that we used to use,” said resident Ted Gonkowicz. “The music is what we listen to, it’s good stuff.”
Ted’s wife Dorothy Gonkowicz agreed, saying “the country fair is great. We played all of the games and liked seeing the pictures of the old cars on the table. And the music makes me want to dance!”
Organizers Claudine Markoja and Stacey Baker, Recreational Therapy Aide, got into the fun and posed with cutouts of the Royal Family in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The organizers’ sense of fun clearly translated into an entertaining event for everyone.
“It’s really about the residents, and creating exciting times for them. They deserve it—they’re wonderful,” said Stacey.
