Janine Landry
Clinical Nurse Educator, Emergency Department, Grey Nuns Community Hospital, Edmonton
I’m living my dream at Covenant Health and I’m loving it!” - Janine Landry
One busy December day, Janine Landry had just finished an education session and was rushing around to the next thing on her to-do list. As she walked through the packed emergency department, she thought to herself, “why am I here?”
When the answer came to her just a few short minutes later, she wrote it on her name tag—it reads, “I’m living my dream at Covenant Health and I’m loving it!”
For as long as Janine can remember, she has wanted to be a nurse, and she’s always loved emergency medicine. Here, she says “you can touch lives and make a difference in a variety of ways. It can be the smallest thing—a simple touch of a hand, or looking into someone’s eyes to diminish the fear they may be facing. Or it can be helping people with broken bones re-set their limbs, or caring for a mom with a sick baby.”
As a clinical nurse educator, Janine is honestly living her dream and spreads her joy and passion for health care throughout the department.
“I love focusing on the strengths of our staff as we work together to enhance skills while allowing each person to be who they are,” she said.
Janine’s integrity is sincere in that she really does honour each person for what they bring to the team.
“She celebrates people’s positive attributes and brings out the best in everyone around her,” said Shelley Buchan, Unit Manager.
Her empathy and passion are integral to the work she does everyday. She is often reinventing her teaching to better ensure nursing staff understand new things. For example, she decided to have the staff bake a cake together one day. She used the analogy of baking a cake, measuring the ingredients and following a recipe to mixing a certain drug cocktail and administering it. Once the concept was grasped, the results were so impressive that the cardiologist came back to her and said, “I don’t know what you did, but they get it!” Janine responded, “We just baked a cake.”
From her work on the Be in the Moment staff appreciation event, to her tremendous gift of working with challenging patients or caring for other members of the Grey Nuns family, Janine exudes her love and passion for her job and the people she works with.
“I did not accomplish these things alone. We are all a reflection of each other. At Covenant Health, we are all connected by compassion, integrity and respect,” said Janine.
“When I get asked about my name tag and how I have the courage to wear it with my personal declaration on it, I say it’s easy when you believe in what you are doing. Have you ever thought about what your name tag might read?”
